Big changes could be coming for this San Francisco Safeway under new proposal

(KRON) — A longtime Safeway in San Francisco’s Richmond District may go through some major changes. A proposal submitted Tuesday by Align Real Estate to the City of San Francisco looks to transform the Safeway at 850 La Playa St. into a mixed-use development space.

The project will expand the current grocery store from 37,422 square feet to a brand new 59,000-square-foot space, a 57% size increase, according to a press release from Align Real Estate. It will also build an eight-story housing project of about 526 residential rental units, about 68 of those affordable housing.

Although the project has not been approved to move forward by the city, Safeway is already planning to temporarily close the La Playa Street store should the redevelopment take place. Current Safeway employees at that location will keep their jobs and be reassigned to a different store in the meantime, a spokesperson said…
