For decades, I watched my friend Jason Albertson bring hope to desperate homeless people in San Francisco. Mental illness, addiction, housing — he handled it all as the finest drug and health counselor that I’ve known in nearly 50 years of reporting on the disaster on our streets. One reason he was so good is that he had the “lived experience” so prized in the counseling world, having conquered a heroin habit many decades ago.

But in the end, Jason fell prey to the very poison he fought to save so many from.
