Golden Gate Ferry passengers will begin seeing major changes in the coming years as the aging fleet is replaced with cleaner and more efficient vessels.
The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District board approved more than $118 million in contracts late last month to start the modernization program, as first reported by the Marin Independent Journal.
Currently, five ferries in the fleet have reached or exceeded their useful lifespan. With parts becoming obsolete, plus more stringent California Air Resources Board regulations, the district is opting to use Federal Transit Administration replacement funding, which is generally available for vessels in service for about 25 years…
