Bay Area police utilize AirTag, license plate readers to find missing elderly people

(KRON) — Police in the Bay Area are crediting newer technologies in helping to locate lost loved ones. An elderly man and an elderly woman who recently went missing in separate incidents across the region were found after being tracked through automated license plate reader cameras in one case, and an Apple AirTag in another.

In San Jose, an at-risk elderly man was reported missing on Tuesday after he did not return home. Knowing he left home in his vehicle earlier that morning, San Jose Police Department officers circulated the area while the AIR3 police helicopter searched from the skies. Automated license plate readers soon alerted to the vehicle being driven in East San Jose.

During a traffic stop of the missing man’s vehicle, he told the responding officer that he was “lost, confused, and very grateful to see police,” SJPD said. He was safely reunited with his family.

San Jose PD called the incident “another great example of how ALPR technology helps us protect our community” and said the technology is “not just by catching dangerous suspects, but also by bringing loved ones home safely.”…
