Conviction in S.F. encampment stabbing that killed man, injured woman

A San Francisco jury convicted a 41-year-old man of a 2023 stabbing at a South of Market encampment that killed a man and injured a woman, authorities announced.

Dennis Duree was convicted of murder and attempted murder in the stabbing near Mission and Washburn streets around 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 28, 2023, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced Friday. Duree is in custody, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for Jan. 29.

Duree had accused the victims of stealing his narcotics after he joined them and fell asleep on a mattress set up on a sidewalk on the 1300 block of Mission Street, Jenkins said. He walked away from the encampment and later returned, fatally stabbing Brandon Mitchell and injuring an unidentified woman, Jenkins said…
