A 23-year-old man died after he was shot last Friday in East Oakland, police said, adding another killing to a city tally officials track closely as the year winds down.
The attack happened around 11:50 PM on a short residential court in the 2700 block of E.C. Reems Ct., where an unknown shooter opened fire while the man was outside, according to The Mercury News. He was later pronounced dead near his home. Police have not released his name, pending notification of his family, and have not identified a suspect as investigators work to determine a motive. The killing is the 62nd homicide Oakland police have investigated this year, compared with 78 at this point last year.
What Police Say
Homicide detectives have taken over the case and are canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage. Officers were back out in the area over the weekend looking for security cameras and residents who might have seen or heard anything around the time of the shooting.
The Oakland Police Department says the investigation is unfolding alongside a broader push to reduce shootings in areas hit hardest by gun violence. Recent department communications describe targeted enforcement, firearms‑recovery efforts, and Ceasefire operations intended to get illegal guns off the street and boost patrol coverage. The Oakland Police Department has highlighted those steps in public safety updates.
Where This Leaves Oakland’s Yearly Toll
The fatal shooting puts Oakland’s confirmed homicide count for 2025 at 62. That figure is lower than the 78 homicides recorded at this point last year, a comparison city leaders often reference when talking about enforcement and prevention strategies, the paper reported.
