San Francisco is expected to award up to $34.7 million to the nonprofit Urban Alchemy and other service providers next week as Mayor Daniel Lurie revamps his strategy for deploying unarmed ambassadors to the city’s neediest areas.
The plan, which will deploy Urban Alchemy ambassadors deeper into South of Market and to any other part of the city that needs them, is the culmination of months of planning led by the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management. It represents a shift from the city assigning ambassadors to fixed posts to a more flexible deployment model.
“Our ambassadors are on the front lines alongside our law enforcement and outreach workers every day,” Lurie said in a statement. “With this new structure, we’ll be able to put ambassadors where they’re needed most and respond more quickly when communities need support.”…
