Man accused of strangling ‘terrified’ dog to death in public charged by SF DA

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A San Francisco man accused of strangling his dog to death in public in what police called “an extremely disturbing incident” has been charged with a felony. Charles Wentworth, 46, is due to be arraigned Wednesday at the San Francisco Hall of Justice, according to SF District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.

Wentworth is facing one felony count of unlawfully killing an animal, according to the DA’s office.

Court documents cited by the DA indicate that on Monday, at approximately 11:25 a.m., Wentworth strangled his pitbull “Smokey” to death in public at a location on the 400 block of China Basin Street. Witnesses say Wentworth aggressively pulled and choked the dog by its leash and collar.

Smokey, witnesses said, was lifted off the ground and its front paws were in the air. Witnesses say that the dog went limp, collapsed and became unresponsive…
