SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California was one of the first states to adopt universal paid sick leave, and in recent years lawmakers have expanded how workers can use it.
In the new year, here are five things to know about California’s laws for paid sick leave.
1. How much sick pay do you get
Employees have five days or 40 hours of paid sick leave, whichever is greater. The language is specific to ensure anyone who might work a 10-hour day still gets at least 5 days off.
You get these hours either at the beginning of the year or by accruing them as you work. Some employers opt for providing one hour of sick pay for every 30 hours you work.
