Midnight store-closure pilot could expand in Tenderloin, SoMa

Taking specific aim at reducing overnight drug-related activity in two of San Francisco’s high-crime neighborhoods, two supervisors want to extend and greatly expand a pilot program requiring certain retail food and tobacco stores to close by midnight.

The proposed legislation from District 6 Supervisor Matt Dorsey and District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood would build on a two-year program set to expire in July that has been credited with reducing crime in the Tenderloin by banning some after-midnight retail operations.

The supervisors want to enact an 18-month ban on certain stores serving the public between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m., and also add new areas to be covered by the prohibition, including more of the Tenderloin and a large swath of the South of Market area. Businesses regulated by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control would be able to stay open until 2 a.m…
