The California exodus may have been overblown, but state growth has slowed markedly, highlighting a new reality that’s unlikely to change anytime soon. A new report from U-Haul backs up the trend, with fewer people across the country using its services to move to the Golden State. California had the slowest growth of any state for the sixth consecutive year.
There was actually an improvement over 2024, however, with 2% fewer moves out of California in 2025. Arrivals to California in U-Hauls also fell, but only 1% since 2024.
