621 people died in San Francisco from drug overdoses in 2025

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Hundreds of people die in San Francisco every year from accidental drug overdoses. 2025 was tragically no different, with 621 deaths recorded, the city’s Department of Public Health director, Dan Tsai, said at a news conference held Friday.

The city’s drug deaths spiked to 725 people during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

In 2023, San Francisco reached an all-time high of 806 drug overdose deaths, including 653 from fentanyl, according to a University of California San Francisco study. At the time, the city’s public health director said, “It is a tragedy that is unfolding every day. We had nearly three deaths a day in August in San Francisco due to overdoses.”…
