A viral Reddit post mocked this Marin sandwich shop’s prices. Now, it’s closed.

The Farmer’s Wife, the sandwich shop known as much for its artisanal ingredients as for its premium price tags, has officially shuttered both of its Bay Area locations. Following the September closure of her cafe at Sebastopol’s The Barlow Market, owner Kendra Kolling closed her remaining Point Reyes Station location in early January.

While Kolling told SFGATE the lunch counter at the West Marin Culture Shop was always a temporary placeholder until the Culture Shop’s owners opened their own cafe concept, she admitted she had considered pulling the plug even sooner. She attributes the business’s struggle to a cooling economic climate, exacerbated by a viral Reddit thread where thousands of users mocked her menu prices.

In early 2025, Kolling awoke to a flood of hateful comments on her social media. Despite her not using Reddit, the viral post had spilled over to her Instagram.

“They were calling me the most vile things, that it was beyond sandwiches,” she said. “It was so hurtful and personal.”…
