The Coyote That Swam to Alcatraz Appears to Be Thriving

A coyote that stunned visitors by swimming across San Francisco Bay to Alcatraz Island earlier this month appears to be thriving.

According to a new update shared by urban wildlife advocates, a tourist photographed the animal on January 24—nearly two weeks after its remarkable crossing—confirming the coyote not only survived the swim but is still alive and active on the island. Rangers have reportedly also found a bird carcass believed to have been hunted by the coyote, further suggesting it’s managing to feed itself.

“I’ve heard that authorities are thinking of removing the coyote because of all the visitors,” wrote @coyoteyipps on Instagram. “In my experience, the coyote should be left alone. He expended a huge amount of effort to reach the island. If he can survive there, we should allow him to, allowed to live the life he has chosen.”…
