The Bay Area has a new best breakfast burrito

I’ve tried about a hundred breakfast burritos from all over the Bay Area, so I don’t say this lightly: The region has a new best breakfast burrito.

While the Mission burrito is the region’s defining dish, breakfast burritos have taken hold over the last several years, starting with Breakfast Little in 2019. They proliferated during the COVID pandemic, with the likes of Bodega in the city, which was followed by wunderkinds such as Semilla, which offers a petite Northern Mexican-style variant, and Al Carajo, where you’ll find the city’s most popular offering.

The new don of breakfast burritos comes from, of all places, smashburger luminary Smack Burgers in San Leandro. Smack Burgers started as a roving popup in 2021, offering ultra lacy smashburgers at breweries around the East Bay and South Bay. The operation grew to a food truck, then multiple standalone locations, the first of which debuted in Los Angeles in 2024.
