The prolific Bay Area architect Henry Hil [1913-1984] is best known for his beautifully crafted homes, working in what’s usually referred to as the Second Bay Tradition. Like two of the notable San Francisco architects he worked closely with in the 1940s—John Dinwiddie and the esteemed emigre architect Erich Mendelsohn—Hill took a light-handed approach to the redwood dwellings he designed. This c.1956 home in the Forest Hill neighborhood is a perfect example, with a witty throwback reference to Steamship Moderne in the curving bay window that perfectly suits the triangular lot.
