Former San Mateo Community College leader found guilty of tax fraud

The former chancellor of the San Mateo County Community College District, Ron Galatolo, was found guilty of tax fraud during his time at the three-campus district’s helm.

Galatolo, 62, resigned without explanation in 2019, putting an abrupt end to his two-decade tenure as chancellor. Two years later, the district terminated the atypical “chancellor emeritus” contract it had extended to Galatolo, citing unethical activities that ranged from undisclosed gifts to the use of public funds for retirement incentives.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office filed felony charges against Galatolo in 2022, alleging corruption uncovered in a probe that began in 2018. He was arrested at San Francisco International Airport while returning from a trip, the district attorney announced that year.
