San Francisco’s Mel’s Drive-In promises to reopen after Lombard Street fire

Mel’s Drive-In says it will reopen its Lombard Street diner after a fire last week caused extensive damage and forced the longtime San Francisco restaurant to close, owners said.

“We’ll be back — refreshed, restored, and better than ever,” the owners of the Marina District landmark wrote in a message to customers, promising a return after repairs are complete.

The diner remains closed as crews assess damage from the early-morning blaze on Tuesday, Feb. 3, which fire officials said started in the kitchen’s flue area and spread into the attic.

While no one was injured, interior video released by the San Francisco Fire Department showed severe fire and water damage above the kitchen, with parts of the ceiling burned or melted away…
