S.F.’s rock ’n’ roll hotel is staying open, new owner vows to keep music traditions alive

Rock ’n’ roll tour managers take note: The song remains the same at the Phoenix Hotel.

The new owner of San Francisco’s iconic hotel said he has been studying pioneering former owner Chip Conley for decades and vows to preserve the vibe and community focus that for decades has made the Tenderloin touchstone a favorite landing spot for touring musicians, attracting everyone from David Bowie to Kurt Cobain.

Binoy Patel, a veteran hotelier who was a competitor of Conley’s while handling finances for the Larkspur Hotel and Restaurant Group, said he had long admired the role the Phoenix played in the city’s cultural and civic life and wanted to double down on those traditions.

“We want to continue all the historical events — the pride party, the swimming pool parties, the DJs, the pool toss,” he said. “I am carrying forward all that stuff and adding more if I can.”…
