The crew behind Bar Part Time is scaling up its late-night buzz into something far bigger: Downtime, a new nightclub-and-restaurant hybrid planned for the Mission. The team is taking over the former Bissap Baobab space at 2243 Mission St., transforming roughly 6,000 square feet into a larger dance floor with a custom sound system. Berkeley’s Rose Pizzeria is on deck to run the kitchen, and yes, they insist the menu will not be pizza.
As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, Downtime is a project from Bar Part Time co-owners Justin Dolezal, Jeremy Castillo, and Dan Small, joined by bartender Eric Ochoa. The team is aiming for a late-fall opening. The new spot will clock in at about 6,000 square feet, compared with Bar Part Time’s roughly 1,500-square-foot home base, and renovations will carve out a bigger dance floor and make room for that custom sound system. Dolezal told the paper that Rose Pizzeria will lead the food program and stressed that the offering will not be pizza.
Bar Part Time’s rise from pandemic pop-up to a brick-and-mortar at 496 14th Street (at Guerrero) in 2021 turned a relatively small bar into a nightly destination, thanks to its mix of minimal-intervention natural wine, DJ nights, and late hours. The leap to a much larger footprint with Downtime signals the owners’ plan to double down on music-forward nightlife while broadening both the beverage and food programs.
Where Downtime Will Land
The address at 2243 Mission St. was most recently known as the longtime home of Bissap Baobab, which announced plans to close its Mission location in late December 2025. Mission Local covered Baobab’s farewell events and the difficulty of keeping such a large space going, and the restaurant’s own website now lists the Mission location as closed.
Food From Rose Pizzeria (But Not Pizza)
Bringing in Berkeley’s Rose Pizzeria to supply Downtime’s kitchen gives the club a serious restaurant partner for a club-sized venue. The San Francisco Chronicle ranks Rose at No. 13 on its Top 100 Restaurants list, a credential the Downtime team clearly hopes will appeal to both dinner guests and late-night dancers.
What To Expect On Tap And On The Dance Floor
Veteran bartender Eric Ochoa is set to design Downtime’s cocktail program, with a focus on balanced, flavorful drinks rather than showy, hyper-technical mixology. Eater SF has chronicled Ochoa’s work revamping and relaunching Mission bars, a track record that suggests Downtime’s bar will lean into crowd-pleasing, well-executed cocktails. Paired with Bar Part Time’s music-first, minimal-intervention wine identity, the new spot is clearly built to offer serious drinks alongside a full-on dance floor…
