An early-morning drive on southbound Interstate 880 in San Leandro turned deadly yesterday, when a single-car crash near the Davis Street exit left two men dead and a woman injured, authorities said.
The collision was reported around 5:30 AM. The car became trapped between a freeway guardrail and an exit signpost, and both men were pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials. The woman in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where she is expected to survive.
The car, a black Nissan Maxima carrying two men and a woman, struck the large post that supports the Davis Street exit sign and then wedged between the post and the guardrail, the California Highway Patrol told KRON4. Officers said none of the occupants appeared to be wearing seatbelts, and CHP investigators said alcohol and/or drugs most likely played a role as they continued their work at the scene.
