Bay Area residents jolted awake as powerful earthquake strikes in dead of night

A powerful 4.6-magnitude earthquake rattled the Bay Area early Thursday morning, waking sleeping residents and shocking people after alerts were sent to phones.

Preliminarily rated a 4.9-magnitude quake, the seismic event struck with a depth of 10.9 kilometers (6.77 miles) near Boulder Creek, California, in the Santa Cruz Mountains — which are just west of San Jose and south of San Francisco.
