Cal athletic department lays off about 20 employees amid reorganization

Cal’s athletic department laid off approximately 20 people in marketing, athletic communications and creative services, as part of a wider effort to reorganize amid widespread changes in college sports.

The affected employees were notified Friday of the layoffs, which take effect in June.

This news comes amid ongoing turbulence in college sports, as schools adapt to a world dominated by the transfer portal, revenue sharing and name, image and likeness (NIL) deals.
