Police: Elderly man hospitalized after ‘random attack’ in San Mateo

A 19-year-old San Mateo resident was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an elderly man Saturday evening, in what police called a “random attack.”

At around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, San Mateo police responded to a reported assault on the 700 block of Laurel Avenue, the department said in a statement. The 83-year-old victim, who suffered visible injuries to his face and head, said he had been attacked from behind while walking home from a local park. He was still in the hospital on Tuesday evening.

While the victim was “unable to provide much detail about the attack,” two witnesses told police they saw the suspect flee into a nearby apartment complex, authorities said.
