A San Jose man has been charged with murder after allegedly driving the wrong way while drunk in Sunnyvale and crashing into a woman headed home from work, authorities said. Brian Burke, 34, was arraigned on the murder charge Monday and is in jail without bail, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
He is accused of killing the 52-year-old Mountain View woman in a head-on crash near the intersection of Commercial Street and Central Expressway in Sunnyvale. Police responded to the crash at about 10:55 p.m. on April 9. When officers arrived, police say they found Burke and the victim each seated behind the wheels of their heavily damaged vehicles.
The woman was on her way home from her job at a local Denny’s, the DA’s office said. She was extricated from her car, then pronounced dead.“More than 10,000 people die in drunk driving incidents every year in this country,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said. “Not one of them was what I would ever call an accident. Every single one was an avoidable criminal tragedy, and in this case — a murder.”…
