San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan entered the California governor’s race pitching himself as the antidote to Sacramento’s dysfunction.
By the time polls closed in the June 2 primary, according to close to a dozen sources, his campaign had devolved into its own form of chaos: bitter staff infighting, an overreliance on wealthy tech donors, and a fundraising strategy so badly timed it left the coffers nearly empty when voters finally started paying attention at the close of the race.
