State Cannabis Crackdown Highlights Ongoing Threats to Santa Cruz Mountains Environment

California’s latest crackdown on illegal cannabis operations underscores concerns that continue to affect rural communities like the Santa Cruz Mountains, where illicit grows have been linked to environmental damage, hazardous chemicals, and public safety risks.

The state’s Unified Cannabis Enforcement Task Force (UCETF) announced that coordinated enforcement operations conducted from April through June 2026 resulted in the seizure and destruction of more than 63,000 pounds of illegal cannabis statewide, the eradication of nearly 90,000 cannabis plants, the seizure of 17 firearms, and 24 arrests.
