A taco business that started with a father and daughter cooking for family parties across Santa Clara County now has its own storefront in the heart of Downtown San Jose. Chico De Mayo’s Street Tacos officially opened its first brick-and-mortar restaurant this month at 152 Post Street, marking the transition from mobile catering outfit to permanent neighborhood eatery.
Mayor Matt Mahan celebrated the milestone in a post on X, writing that San José has the best food in the Bay and telling the new restaurant it’s in good company among the city’s dining scene. The mayor’s praise came as Chico De Mayo’s held its grand opening on Post Street, a corridor that sits at the commercial and nightlife core of Downtown San Jose.

The recognition didn’t stop at the mayor’s office. The County of Santa Clara issued a certificate of recognition honoring Chico De Mayo’s Tacos, and Santa Clara County Supervisor Betty Duong, whose District 2 covers central and eastern San Jose, commended the opening last Thursday as a vital addition to the local small business community. A California State Assembly certificate of recognition was also issued for the occasion, and Assemblymember Ash Kalra, whose District 25 includes Downtown San Jose, personally welcomed Chico De Mayo’s Tacos and congratulated owner Hector, known as “Chico,” and his team on the launch.
From Family Catering Gigs to a Post Street Address
Chico De Mayo’s traces its roots back to 2019, when Hector and his family began building a catering business around recipes drawn from their ties to Texas, Mexico, and California. For six years, the operation served celebrations and events across Santa Clara County before making the leap to a fixed location this year. The new restaurant shares its address at 152 Post Street with Myth Taverna and Lounge, an established modern Greek restaurant and nightspot that operates as both a daytime dining destination and evening entertainment venue, according to Visit San Jose…
