One of the most bizarre results of conference realignment in the last few years is the fact that Stanford and California ended up in the ACC. Both California schools are staples of the West Coast academic culture, and somehow their sports programs ended up playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
This is a direct result of the implosion of the Pac-12, which saw many of the schools of the conference leave for the Big Ten, Big 12, and the ACC. While the move has secured the financial status of the athletic programs of these schools, it has also brought with it a plethora of problems.
