Suspected jewelry store thieves arrested after hot pursuit up California’s Highway 101

In a prompt and effective response, the San Mateo Police Department arrested a man and a woman on January 30, 2024, following an attempted theft at a jewelry store on the unit block of East 3rd Avenue.

The sequence of events unfolded when the San Mateo Police received a 911 call from the jewelry store, reporting the presence of a male matching the description of a known jewelry thief. Officers swiftly arrived at the scene to engage with the male suspect and investigate the potential crime.

As officers approached the business, the male suspect exited and, upon spotting the officers, attempted to flee. He dashed into a waiting black Volvo station wagon, which hastily drove away from the scene, police said.

Additional officers converged in the area to locate the fleeing vehicle, while the initial investigation revealed that the male suspect had entered the store with the intention of stealing jewelry but left without carrying out the act, plice added.

The black Volvo was spotted merging onto northbound Highway 101, prompting officers to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle came to a halt on the shoulder of the highway, and both occupants, identified as Randolf Reiger and Autumn Yates, were safely removed from the car, police said.
