Motorcyclist fleeing from unmarked California cop car runs red, fatally collides with marked cop car

In a tragic turn of events on the evening of January 30, 2024, a collision between a motorcycle and a marked San Jose Police Department (SJPD) patrol vehicle has resulted in the death of the motorcyclist.

The incident unfolded at approximately 6:40 PM in the area of Story Road and Jackson Avenue.

According to the San Jose Police Department, the chain of events began when an unmarked unit assigned to the Violent Crimes Enforcement Team (VCET) attempted to conduct an enforcement stop on a 2006 Kawasaki Motorcycle near Adrian Way and Story Road, police said. The motorcycle, however, fled from the officers at a high rate of speed, heading eastbound on Story Road. Notably, officers did not initiate a pursuit, according to police.

As the pursuit unfolded, an unrelated marked SJPD patrol vehicle, adhering to traffic rules, was making a legal U-turn on a green light at the intersection of Jackson Avenue from westbound Story Road onto eastbound Story Road, police said.

Tragically, the fleeing motorcycle collided with the marked patrol vehicle in a broadside impact, police said.
