Victim dies from injuries after being hit by garbage truck in San Jose

( KRON ) — A male victim died from his injuries after he was struck by a garbage truck in San Jose, city police said Thursday. The crash happened on Jan. 22 and the victim died on Jan. 26.

The San Jose Police Department said the garbage collection truck was turning from Elm Street onto McKendrie Street when it hit the pedestrian who was crossing McKendrie in an unmarked crosswalk.

The crash happened at about 6:11 p.m. The adult male driver of the truck stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The pedestrian was stabilized at a hospital before dying four days later, SJPD said.

There have been several instances of garbage trucks being involved in fatal crashes in San Jose. In September, a man was killed by a garbage truck near Jackson Square. Another fatal crash involving a garbage truck happened in Feb. 2022.

There have now been six fatal crashes in San Jose in 2024. Four of the victims were pedestrians.
