Tesla slapped with fine for waste at Fremont factory, EV centers

(KRON) — Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price joined a statewide coalition of district attorneys Friday in announcing Tesla agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle allegations Tesla violated California’s environmental hazardous waste control laws.

A judge in San Joaquin County issued the settlement order against Elon Musk’s electric vehicle tech company. Tesla was accused of illegally disposing hazardous waste at its factory in Fremont, as well as 57 electric car service centers and 18 solar energy facilities throughout California. Tesla’s attorneys admitted to no wrong-doing.

“While electric vehicles may benefit the environment, the manufacturing and servicing of these
vehicles still generates many harmful waste streams,” San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said.

The civil settlement resolves a nearly six-year investigation. “Although Tesla denied any wrongdoing, this settlement and the injunction imposed on it ensures the company will follow environmental laws,” Price said.
