Food safety tips for after a power outage recommended by officials

( KRON ) — With tens of thousands of people across the Bay Area still without power Monday following Sunday’s storms, officials are offering food safety tips. The City of San Jose posted on advisory on X, formerly Twitter, recommending the following tips.

When in doubt, throw it out

Officials recommend never tasting food to determine if it is safe to eat. “When in doubt, throw it out,” San Jose officials said on X.

Four hour limit

Meat, fish, cut fruits, vegetables, eggs, milk and leftovers should be thrown out after four hours without power or a cold source, according to officials.

Check for odor, color and texture

Any food items with an unusual odor, color or texture should be thrown out, officials said.

Check appliance thermometer

If you have an appliance thermometer in your freezer, officials recommend checking to see if it is still at 40 degrees or below.

As of around noon Monday, PG&E officials said there were about 185,000 customers without power with the highest number, 64,239, in the South Bay.
