With 49ers playing, California cops plan to go out patrolling for drunk drivers on Super Bowl Sunday

As Super Bowl weekend approaches, the Union City Police Department is gearing up to intensify efforts in identifying and deterring drivers suspected of driving under the influence (DUI). Sgt. Steven Fong emphasizes the preventable nature of impaired driving, urging individuals to make responsible choices and opt for sober drivers or alternative transportation if they have consumed alcohol or drugs impairing their abilities.

The police department is keen to remind the public that impaired driving extends beyond alcohol, encompassing prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs that may interfere with driving. They stress the importance of following usage instructions and heeding warning labels to ensure safe driving. Additionally, despite the legalization of medicinal and recreational marijuana, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

Drivers caught under the influence and charged with a first-time DUI can expect substantial consequences, including an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, alongside a suspended license.
