SANTA CLARA, Calif. (TCD) — Law enforcement apprehended a 24-year-old man this week on suspicion of fatally shooting his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son.
On Tuesday, February 20, around 2:25 a.m., Santa Clara Police Department officers were dispatched to the 3700 block of Poinciana Drive in response to a distress call from a woman reporting that her live-in boyfriend had shot her young son.
Responding promptly, officers arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving the call.
Upon entering the residence, officers discovered the victim with a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts, including CPR, the child tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
During their investigation, authorities recovered a handgun from the premises.
Sergio Gomez, identified as the caller’s boyfriend, was located near the residence by police and apprehended following a brief altercation.
Gomez sustained minor injuries and was subsequently transported to a hospital for medical evaluation. Upon his release, he will be placed under police custody and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on a charge of murder.
