Safety officials provide essential tips for people visiting California’s beaches over July 4th

As locals and visitors prepare to enjoy the Fourth of July at Half Moon Bay State Beach, Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks offer essential water safety tips to ensure a safe holiday.

Supervising children by appointing a designated “water watcher” is crucial; adults should take turns to ensure constant supervision, officials stated.

In case of a rip current, swimmers are advised to stay calm, avoid fighting the current, and swim parallel to the shore until they can swim back safely, according to state officials.

If someone is in distress, seek help from a lifeguard or call 9-1-1. Always obey posted warnings, swim in designated areas, and stay near lifeguard towers, according to state officials.

Remember to never turn your back on the ocean, they added.
