Gilroy fire crew assigned to Park Fire saves drowning girl while off-duty in Chico

( KRON ) — A Gilroy fire crew assigned to the Park Fire located and saved a girl drowning at a hotel pool while they were off-duty, Gilroy fire captain Daniel Lozano said on Monday.

Lozano was going out to eat with engineer Carlos Hernandez and firefighter Marcus Ortega in Chico on their off-day when Ortega discovered the dire situation.

He saw what looked like someone being pulled out of a pool at a local motel, Lozano said. The crew turned their engine around, confirmed the situation was a child drowning and helped pull the girl out of the pool.

The crew then reported the drowning to local authorities and performed CPR, Lozano said. With the crew’s help, the girl was able to resume breathing on her own.

“We were in the right spot at the right time,” Lozano said. “It was a good time for her for us to be there.”

The girl was hospitalized and survived while the crew returned to the Park Fire the next day.
