Despite high costs, homelessness, California Cities Among Safest in U.S. Suburbs, Report Finds

A recent ranking by SmartAsset has spotlighted several California suburbs as some of the safest in the United States. The analysis, which examined 360 suburbs near major U.S. cities, evaluated safety metrics including crime rates, vehicular deaths, and drug overdose statistics.

Among the top 20 safest suburbs, California cities featured prominently:

  • Palo Alto ranks 14th overall with low violent crime rates and moderate property crime statistics. The city’s median monthly housing cost is $3,278, with residents spending about 18.4% of their income on housing.
  • Mountain View is close behind at 16th place. The city has a similar profile to Palo Alto, with median monthly housing costs of $2,948 and 20.3% of income going towards housing.
  • Pacifica also made the list, securing the 18th spot. It has a median monthly housing cost of $2,894, with 22.9% of income dedicated to housing.
  • Livermore rounds out the top 20, noted for its low violent crime rates. The city’s median monthly housing cost is $2,856, and residents allocate 22.5% of their income to housing.
