California utility set to build first “Net Zero” area; Excess heat used to power 400 new homes

A bold new project aimed at shaping the future of downtown San Jose was announced today, led by real estate developer Westbank and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). The proposal, revealed at PG&E’s 2024 Innovation Summit with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, calls for the development of three cutting-edge data centers and over 4,000 new residential units, all powered by clean energy.

Designed to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence-driven infrastructure and housing, the project aligns with San Jose’s commitment to a sustainable, net-zero future. PG&E will deliver 200 megawatts of energy to the data centers, while a district energy system will harness excess heat from the centers to provide hot water and heating for neighboring buildings, cutting energy costs and reducing carbon footprints.
