Living in a big city isn’t just for the super-rich. There are at least 10 U.S. cities with populations over 396,000 where you can live comfortably on a salary of less than $80,000 a year. For some perspective, living comfortably in San Jose, California, requires more like $266,000 a year.

The definition of “comfortably” varies, of course. For the purposes of this story, GOBankingRates defines living comfortably by making twice the total annual cost of living.
GOBankingRates has compiled a list of large U.S. cities (population 396,000 and up) that fall below $80,000 for the comfortable living bar . We’ve done this by analyzing data from the U.S. Census American Community Survey, Sperlings Best Places, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey. We’ve also applied the 50/30/20 financial rule, which calls for 50% of your after-tax income to go to needs, 30% to go to wants, and 20% to go to savings and debt repayment .
