Man accused of killing wife on I-580 faces 56 years to life in prison: DA

(KRON) — The man accused of shooting and killing his wife on I-580 in 2023 was formally charged by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office on Monday.

Antioch PD investigating Monday morning homicide

The criminal complaint alleges that Nathaniel McCowan, 49, murdered his wife on the eastbound shoulder of I-580 near the Edwards Avenue offramp on Feb. 26, 2023. He was arrested last Thursday by officers from the California Highway Patrol Oakland division and other law enforcement agencies.

According to the Alameda County D.A., prosecutors charged McCowan with one count of murder, one count of corporal injury to a relationship partner, and one count of possession with a firearm by a felon with priors — all felonies.

The D.A. confirmed the charges also “include a special allegation 2-strikes (one prior) for a previous conviction.” It is believed that McCowan is not eligible for probation.

The D.A. said McCowan faces up to 56 years to life in prison, if convicted and sentenced of all charges. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday.
