California encourages public to help enforce statewide polystyrene foam ban

(FOX 5/KUSI) — California now has a dedicated webpage for the public to report violations of the statewide ban on foodware made from expanded polystyrene (EPS), commonly known as Styrofoam.

Beginning January 1, 2025, Senate Bill 54 makes it illegal for producers to sell or distribute EPS food service products, such as single-use containers and cups, in or into the state.

Producers were required to show a 25% recycling rate of EPS products statewide by the end of 2024 in order to continue sales, but this requirement was not met. Foam foodware is not accepted in most curbside recycling programs, so recycling rates remain around 1% nationwide…
