Caltrans breaks ground on new scale facility on I-80 capable of inspecting 1,000 trucks per hour

California transportation officials recently kicked off a construction project to build a new “state of the art” truck scales facility in Cordelia.

On August 15, 2025, Caltrans held a groundbreaking ceremony for a project to replace the existing Cordelia Truck Scales along westbound I‐80.

Weigh In Motion And More At New Truck Scales

Caltrans stated that the new facility “will have the capacity to inspect up to 1000 trucks per hour passing the facility 24 hours per day, seven days a week.”

The new Cordelia truck scales will be located less than a mile east from the current location and will provide a new braided off‐ramp connection and new entrance ramp connection to and from I‐80 West.

“The new facility will have the capacity to inspect all westbound I‐80 trucks passing the facility 24 hours per day, seven days a week, with seven covered inspection areas to accommodate long vehicle combinations,  elevated structures to enable inspectors to check the domes and top portions of cargo trucks, “Weigh In Motion” scales with the capability to sort truck traffic into the appropriate lane along the approach roadway, and a minimum of four sets of scales to accommodate two lines of empty and loaded trucks,” Caltrans said…
