On Friday, a San Jose spot known for its $1.99 smash burgers opened a new restaurant in Berkeley to long lines. Campus Burgers gave away over 1,600 free smash burgers to celebrate its grand opening just two blocks from the UC Berkeley campus.
“It was crazy but pretty cool,” said co-owner Jim Angelopoulos. “It’s nice to see a long line around the block.”
Aside from the new 2506 Channing Way restaurant, Campus Burgers has two other locations: one by San Jose State University, and the other on Park Avenue in San Jose. The restaurant’s menu offers astoundingly low prices: a $1.99 hamburger, $2.99 cheeseburger and $4.99 double cheeseburger. To keep prices low, Campus Burgers relies on high traffic — fortunately for them, UC Berkeley has no shortage of students looking for a cheap meal. Even if they have to purchase multiple items to get full (the 2-ounce smashburgers are on the smaller side), the prices are still cheaper than competitors…
