80-year-old woman killed in head-on crash near Santa Cruz

(KRON) — An 80-year-old woman from Felton was killed in a head-on-crash on Highway 9 in the Ben Lomond area of Santa Cruz County Saturday.

The victim was driving northbound in a red, 1967 Volkswagen Beetle when the bug collided head-on with a silver 2006 Toyota Sequoia headed in the opposite direction, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash happened at about 8:20 a.m., south of Brackney Road.

“For reasons still under investigation, both vehicles collided head-on,” CHP said. “As a result of the crash, the driver of the Volkswagen sustained major injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel, despite life-saving efforts. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.”

Officers have not determined how fast the VW bug was going at the time of the crash. It’s unclear if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
