A jailhouse brawl broke out among approximately 30 inmates at the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City Friday, leaving four deputies injured and sending six inmates to local hospitals.
The melee erupted around 10:45 a.m. during recreation time in one of the jail’s housing units, prompting staff to lock down the building as backup arrived, the San Mateo Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The sheriff’s office said trained staff defused the fight by using “less-lethal” options.
Four deputies sustained minor injuries from breaking up the fight, and six inmates were taken to area hospitals for treatment, the sheriff’s office said.
