An air quality advisory has been issued in the Bay Area due to drifting wildfire smoke, filling some neighborhoods with a chemical smell. The Bay Area Air District issued the advisory on Saturday evening and expects conditions to persist Sunday.
The Moon Complex was sparked by lightning in the first week of September and has been burning steadily since then along the Rogue River corridor in southwestern Oregon; the area is one of the most popular river rafting spots in the nation. Over the last week, the fire exploded anew, ballooning to nearly 13,000 acres.
Wind has carried wildfire smoke south, mixing “with the marine layer that is moving onshore over the Bay Area,” the air district said in a press release. Skies may be hazy, and the smell of smoke has been present, particularly in foggy San Francisco neighborhoods.
