Former Palo Alto hookah bar owner convicted for second time of murdering ex-girlfriend

A Palo Alto man was convicted this week, for the second time, of killing his ex-girlfriend and lighting their home in 2009.

A Santa Clara County jury found Bulos “Paul” Zumot guilty of murder and arson on the 16th anniversary of the murder, which shocked the otherwise peaceful community when it occurred on Oct. 15, 2009. A jury previously convicted him of the same crimes in 2011 and sentenced him to 33 years to life.

After an appeal Zumos was granted a new trial in 2020 after a federal judge sided with his arguments that prosecutors failed to disclose evidence to the jury that supported his alibi, Palo Alto Online reported…
