$5-million settlement reached after San Jose teacher impregnated student: law firm

(KRON) — A $5.75-million settlement was reached with Campbell Union High School District for a case stemming from a teacher who allegedly impregnated one of his 15-year-old students, attorneys with the law firm Cerri, Boskovich & Allard announced Tuesday.

The multi-million dollar settlement resolves a lawsuit filed on behalf of a former Leigh High School student who claimed her teacher, Shawn Thomas, raped her several times at school in San Jose and forced her to have an abortion in 2003. Thomas’ wife was the dean of Leigh High School, the lawsuit states.

The former student’s sister wrote in a statement released by the law firm Tuesday, “This settlement is one more step toward my sister reclaiming her life after the immense harm she endured. While nothing can undo what happened, we are grateful that the district is finally being held accountable for its failures. Our hope is that this moment not only helps my sister move forward, but also ensures that no other student is ever ignored or unprotected in the way she was.”…
